- Major’s girl friend’s father reveals
The case of the Major who committed suicide by blasting a hand bomb in his cab is still been heard in courts.
On the first day at courts, the Major’s girl friend’s
ather had stated that he saw the Major for the first time on the day he died. Then he had said that he had not told the truth to make sure that his daughter doesn’t get any black mark on her character. Later, the Police investigations have been able to find out that the Major and the girl’s father had been doing some business related to items in the port as well. The girl’s father has revealed the truth and confessed in the courts the other day. Ranjith Waththage, a retired Sergeant Major in the army had confessed in the courts before the Magistrate Dulani Amarasinghe of the Matara Courts.
“Wathsala is my daughter. She is 17 years and 3 months old. She is following tuition classes. In June 2011 my daughter has got a missed call. I got to know about this relationship in only May 2012. That boy, Sampath called me. He said that he is a Major in the army and that he is working in Saliyapura camp. He said that he is having a relationship with my daughter. I told him that my daughter is still schooling and that I will see.
Then I started searching particulars about him and called the Saliyapura camp. They told me that Sampath is a Major and he is single and that he is from Kurunegala.
After
we got to know, one day he invited us to come to Matara in March, 2012. I
can’t exactly remember the date. Somehow, we went to meet him with my
wife, son and the two daughters. We met at the Children’s park in Matara
and spoke for about an hour. I bought lunch packets and we ate there
and Sampath left at about 12 o’ clock as he had to report for work. After that he invited us to join him to go to Kataragama to full fill a vow after purchasing a brand new cab vehicle. He said that his mother and sister will be joining us. Like he promised, he came to Kamburupitiya in his cab but he came alone. I refused to go because his mother didn’t come. Yet since we were ready, we started the journey. My wife, son and the daughters joined with me. We went for the 7o’ clock ‘poojawa’ and stayed the night at Dutugemunu Pilgrims’ rest.
My wife, daughters and I occupied one room and Sampath and my son shared another room. Afterwards we went to Nuwara Eliya, spend some time in the gardens and had a boat ride as well. We spent the night at one of Sampath’s friend’s house. Sampath, my son and I shared one room and my wife and the daughters shared another. There was a party at his friend’s house and there was liquor as well. On our way home, we went to Ratnapura to visit Punchi Dambadiwa and spent the night at a hotel in Padukka. My son and Sampath stayed in the vehicle. We took many photographs with him. We went to the zoological gardens as well. On our way from Colombo a canter hit the cab from the rear near the color lights in Matara. We didn’t complain to the police. At Kumburupitiya, Sampath gave me the vehicle and asked me to take it home saying that he would go to work by bus. He sent the vehicle home. When we trying to wash the vehicle, it hit the wall and I told that to Sampath. He sent the Insurance guy home and we repaired the vehicle. By that time, the vehicle was at our place for about a month. After that he sent one of his friends to Kamburupitiya and I handed over the vehicle to him.
We did
business together. We bought stuff from the port and sold it outside.
The fist income was Rs 3 lacks. For the last time, he gave us Rs 13
lacks. We got Rs 10 lacks in one go and we still have to settle some
money. We got a call in August from a person who called himself to be Sampath’s brother. He said that he is from Mawanella and that his sister is married to Sampath who is having a relationship with my daughter. He said that Sampath is having two kids as well.
Then Sampath’s wife called and told that she is married to Sampath. We tried calling him but his phone was switched off. After that, Sampath’s wife spoke to my daughter and she wanted to stop the relationship with him.
On the 18th Sampath asked us to come and meet him in Matara at about 10.30 in the morning. I told him that I am busy and that I could come to Thihagoda. Then, we wanted buy some electrical items as well so we came towards Matara in our three wheeler. On our way, we met Sampath’s vehicle near Mapalana. He asked us to get into his vehicle. My wife, daughter and I got into his vehicle and we drove towards Thihagoda.
We stopped near Thihagoda Police station and bought a bottle of water and cool drinks. Sampath and I got off the vehicle and my wife and daughter stayed in the back seat. We spoke about their relationship. Finally, he apologized and worshipped both my wife and me. His last words to my daughter were to “study well”. When we turned to go, he gave us a bag full of things saying that those were what we have given him. When we walked about 10 -15 m, we heard a blast. When we turned back we saw that smoke coming out of his vehicle.
We walked towards the vehicle. A police jeep came towards us and we informed them the about the incident and when we went up to the cab, we saw that Sampath’s stomach and his body has got injured. We never thought that he would do such a thing. He spoke to us well before this incident.
We handed over the bag that was given to my daughter by him.”
The magistrate ordered to forward the post mortem report on the next hearing on the 28th and that the final decision will be given on that day.
